I missed last week, I'll blame it on Christmas! I actually had a solid week. 5-0 in my 5 team pool and 5-1 in my pick 6 but I am not adding them in since it was the whole week and not just 1 game I posted late. I am doing well enough on picks I don't need to cheat and I wouldn't want anything not documented and time stamped for this nice run I am having this season. Hope to get back to a couple posts a week and not just picks after the first of the year.
I had ND +3 earlier, you'll have to trust me or ask one of the 92 people who are in my pool.
I have under 54 in the SC/FSU game.
Tomorrow I like Wisconsin +3
Sunday let's go Minnesota +3 and over 42 in that game vs Lions. Steelers -5.5, Ravens - 9.5, San Diego -3.5, NYG -4 and to make it a nice round 10 for the weekend I'll take Rams -3.
I love the Bears at +10 if I believe that they are going to play the whole game but I don't. If the Falcons win at noon then I think the Bears starters play a half at most. So I am staying away.

WTF is going on here?
A year ago I was on record that I was not a BK guy. Then the off season was filled with positive press and how he was doing the right thing. It kinda started to win me over. Still worried how the change in offensive philosophy would work and would they play D or just get in a shootout in every game.
Silly me worrying about football stuff. The season starts with football players being charged with underage drinking, team gets beat in creative ways against Michigan and Michigan State, then they can't beat Navy.
The fireable offense is making Declan Sullivan climb into a scissor lift and go 50 ft in the air when winds are gusting 50mph. Football wins and losses go out the window when the coach is ultimately responsible for the death of a student affiliated with his team. The coach and the university remain quiet.
They go out and lose to Tulsa and fall to 4-5, season seems lost. They take a week off and beat a ranked opponent in Utah and then beat Army to gain bowl eligibility. Defense gives up just 3 points in back to back weeks. The death of Sullivan is still a story but its going on behind the scenes and kudos goes to the family for keeping the matter as private as possible. The team appears headed in right direction.
Hang on!! News that a female student from St.Mary's college committed suicide 9 days after reporting to ND Campus Police that she was sexually assaulted by a ND football player surfaces. Now, this case is missing facts, no name of the player, the assault is alleged and the victim claims no "penetration", the student was already battling depression issues, the ND police didn't report anything or share anything with proper authorities investigating her death. Until all the facts are shared I won't pin this one on BK too but its getting harder and harder to believe he is the right guy for the job if it is going to continue to tarnish the reputation of the University. In the past, the football team did the tarnish thing but it was ON THE FIELD now its becoming a problem in society as well. Just not acceptable.

Bookieman Week 11
NCAA Football:
NIU Huskies -14 at Ball St, Huskies on their way to a MAC West Title and a spot in MAC Championship game. Iowa +4 vs Ohio State, this is as much about my dislike of tOSU as it is anything else. Violates the first rule of gambling about betting heart over head. Oklahoma -7 at Baylor.
NFL Football:
Under 44 Wash at Tenn, Over 44 GB at Minn, Jacksonville -2.5 vs Cleveland, Under 44 Seattle at New Orleans, Atlanta -3 at St. Louis

Bear Down!!
The good news? The Bears are 7-3 and have 10 days to prepare for the Eagles. The bad news? The current combined record of the Bears remaining opponents is 31 - 23 and that includes Minnesota and Detroit at (5-13) Philly and GB are both 6-3, NE and the Jets are both 7-2.
The Bears played OK tonight, ran for about 130 yds, threw for enough to keep Miami honest but need to improve on scoring TD's instead of FG's. Highlight was when Danieal Manning lit up Davon Bess with a textbook hit late in the game. (still shot above)
The O-line has been better but still not completely fixed. Cutler was sacked 3 times and fumbled on one of them, and he threw a pick after back-peddaling away from a collapsing pocket. JaMarcus Webb got called for 3 holding penalties and at times there were no holes to run through.
When you look ahead to the last 6 weeks you really can't help but look back at the back to back home losses to Seattle and Washington and say WTF? There is still work to be done, even if the Vikings and Lions pack it in and the Bears get 2 wins that is only 9(5-0 in division) and they will most likely need 10 to make the playoffs so they must beat at least one of Philly, NE, NYJ, and GB. Those first 3 teams all come to Chicago. Nothing is locked up yet, still plenty of work to be done
Illini v. Texas in Hoops
I just watched this game on dvr after watching the Bears dominate the fins in Miami. Good win for the Bears. Still have Philly, NE, Jets, and GB on sked as well as at detroit and at minnesota. They had to win tonight and they did.
First time this year I could watch the Illini, first off, Jereme Richmond is damn good! As for the team they still look lost on offense. The passing does not lead to an open guy or an open shot and they are forced to settle for long range jumpers. Some possessions they choose to jack up 3's without getting into the offense. Bruce still has work to do.
That first half was solidly entertaining and if that was a preview of the Big Ten or the season as a whole it is going to be a fun year watching college hoops.

25 hr hoops marathon
The unofficial kickoff to the best "amateur" sport on the planet. ESPN's 25 hour hoops marathon begins at midnight et following MNF. The rundown of games can be found here
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=5809267
If you can't catch all the games, here are some of the highlights of the series. The first game, Miami at Memphis features 2nd year coach Josh Pastner trying to get the tigers back to the top of Conf USA after their run as champs ended last season. The 2nd game is for the 30 somethings who remember the days of Steve Lavin at UCLA, he's back and leading St. John's as the go out west to play WCC front runners St. Mary's.
A noon et mid major battle between Oral Roberts and Tulsa is the first must see game on Tuesday. The appetizer for the 3 course meal Tuesday evening is the 4pm et tilt between ranked teams, #24 Va Tech vs. #3 Kansas State, followed by the main course #5 Ohio State vs #10 Florida and then topped off with dessert. Last year's runner up #18 Butler travels to Louisville to face "Quicky Ricky's" squad.
This is a warm up for the pre-season NIT and the Maui Invitational and should be enough to welcome the casual fan to the 2010-11 season. This is just the opening mile to the "marathon" that is college basketball that culminates with the final sprint that is the revamped 68 team tourney in mid March.
Ryno back to where it began
He didn't get the Cubs managerial job and as I have stated here before I am OK with that. The Cubs are not in good shape on the major league level and Ryno would have been yet another failed manager. His reputation tarnished within the structure of the organization.
The rumors of him being considered for other MLB openings never materialized but he felt like he was screwed over by Jim Hendry and didn't want to go back to Iowa as the AAA manager. Now comes news that he is headed back to where his MLB career started, the Phillies organization. He still doesn't have a big league job, he is the AAA manager for the Phils but its still a better place for him then on the bench in Chicago.
I wish him all the success and hope that he doesn't get scooped up before the Cubs can get through the Quade years quickly and then the new GM, Hendry will go when Quade goes, can build a winner with Ryno at the helm.

Fantasy Football Week 8
In the Wannabe's league we only are allowed to add players via free agency twice during the season. Once between weeks 3 and 4 and again between weeks 7 and 8. It is unlimited and goes by waiver order but only open for a 24 hour period. I traded a 7th round pick to get Ryan Torain of the Redskins during this waiver period. So I added Andre Johnson and Torain to that team since last Sunday.

Random Musings from the Weekend
- Can the NCAA finally blow up the BCS??!! Alabama, Ohio St, Oklahoma in consecutive weeks as #1 all lose to conference rivals. This is not the 80's where the elite programs could use TV exposure as a recruiting tool. Conferences have their own networks for TV exposure including the Mountain West. A school, BYU, is starting its own TV network. Parity is widespread and its time to realize that schools like Utah, TCU and Boise State ARE that good. The cry for a playoff system should be louder than ever, the rankings are a joke!
- So its finally come to this, twitter user @Golfer904, whose bio states "Marketing Consultant, Sports fan, avid golfer, Conservative" and who tweeted that he is a Purdue alum, tweeted this last night: "still have a chance at six wins even with all the injuries. Part of the problem is ESPN has been pretty nasty to Purdue in the past."
Part of the football Boilermakers' problem is ESPN's nastiness? I was intrigued so I kept reading more tweets. "Mark May referred to Purdue as Purdon't on tv a few weeks back. Pretty unprofessional in my book and pissed a lot of alumni off." A meathead o-linemen, former member of the "Hogs", and Pitt grad just single handedly made the Purdue football team a .500 squad and angered alumni from a prestigious Big 10 university by calling them Purdon't? GASP! When the person @Golfer904 had tweeted didn't overwhelmingly agree with him he backtracked a little to defend his displeasure.
"I was by far not the only one who was pissed about it.....3 different threads on G&B.com trashing May and ESPN when it happened." (ooh that will show them) and " The fact May stooped to the level of an IU fan on Nat. TV is what got me upset." A guy with a degree from a university such as Purdue should be holding his head high and thumping his chest once in a while. He should also consider the source and recognize that May's comments were harmless. What should upset him is the fact that the coach of the football team is bad, they can't recruit a QB, and the transfer QB they did have is out for the season. Then with rage in his heart he should drop to his knees, look up to the heavens and cry out "Whyyyyyy" in response to the centerpiece of the Purdue basketball team getting hurt yet again and diminishing the chances of a team that some had picked to be in the Final Four for the upcoming season.
- Some analysts expressed surprise in the fact that Navy beat ND on Saturday or in the way they did it so convincingly. I ask Why? Notre Dame couldn't stop the run against Michigan, Michigan State, or Stanford and yet when they play a team whose offense is the triple option these folks think a loss is a surprise. Navy threw the ball 3 times in the entire game, 2 completion for 70+yds and the 3rd attempt resulted in a pass interference call against ND.
- Death is not an option, Lovie Smith, Brad Childress, or Norv Turner? As a bonus choice Andy Reid's clock management skills. You hear all the stories about how these NFL coaches put in 18-20 hour days so why is it none of them can do simple math involving a game clock, a play clock, and timeouts or have basic knowledge of the NFL rulebook and know when to challenge a play that was ruled incorrectly on the field.
- Why are NFL referees so bad at what they do. At least 3 times in the Minnesota/Green Bay game last night they blew obvious calls. One didn't get challenged by Childress and resulted in a GB TD. One was blatantly obvious and GB had to challenge it to prevent themselves from giving up a TD and the 3rd one was incorrectly called and would have resulted in a lead change in the final minute of the game. It was fixed by booth review. A similar error was made during the 3rd Q of the Redskins/Bears game when a goal line QB sneak was not called a TD and instead ruled a fumble and thus a change of possession and good ole Lovie Smith did not challenge it yet he wasted a challenge on the previous play even though the result of that play gave his team the ball, 1st and goal from the 1 yd line.
- Finally. NCAA Men's basketball teams all over the country completed their first full week of practice and the season starts in about 3 weeks. An ongoing investigation into the Tennessee Vols men's program involving head coach Bruce Pearl keeps turning up violations and the revelation that the guy knew he was breaking the rules as he was doing it and just told the parties involved to deny it if they were ever asked. Classy Bruce, real classy! The folks in Knoxville are dealing with the fact that their football program has become irrelevant and can't stomach the fact that the men's hoops program would go the same way if Pearl was fired otherwise the former whistle blower would already be one of the many Americans in the unemployment line.
Bookieman Week 7 Recap
Finally! A college weekend to be proud of. It took awhile but I had a nice Saturday. Sunday is an absolute nightmare. Cleveland beats the Saints at home? Really? The Super Bowl Champs, Really? The Ravens, masters of defense, give up 34 points at home to Buffalo??

Fantasy Football Week 7
We have a trade, a couple of weeks ago I traded Mendenhall and Hines Ward for Reggie Wayne and Ryan Mathews in the Addiction league, jury is still out on that one but as of now I am on the losing side of it. Yesterday I made a trade in the WPM league. In what I felt was my weakest team of the 5 when the season started, I scratched my way to 3-3 and only a game out of first but also a game away from missing the playoffs. So with Addai getting beat up on a weekly basis I went out and got Steven Jackson to pair with LeShon McCoy. Addai and Ronnie Brown are now my backups. I had to give up a 1st rounder next year but it is a 3 player keeper league. I am poised to go into the draft with Rivers, McCoy, and S Jax. More importantly it should provide a big boost for the rest of this year.
WPM - QB 2 RB 2 WR TE K DST 3-3

Here is where the big mistake was made, apparently after picking up Heath Miller I didn't start him, Watson scored the same as or maybe even more than Miller so I could have just left it, either way I would have won & my opponent would have made the mistake by starting D. Brown. Instead it was me and I lost by less than 1/2 of a point.

Bookieman Week 3 Recap
Having issue loading my image so an image free post.
NCAA: Alabama -7 at Arkansas, Stanford -4.5 at Notre Dame, and Oregon -11 at Arizona State. Bama had to rally late to win, Stanford dominated and the Ducks pushed at -11. 1-1-1
NFL: Pittsburgh -3 at Tampa Bay, Cleveland/Baltimore Total Under 37, Detroit +11 at Minnesota, Cincinnati - 3 at Carolina, San Francisco -2.5 at Kansas City, and New Orleans -4 vs Atlanta. Steelers rolled and Bengals looked good on D. Detroit turned the ball over too many times, SF is awful and Atlanta out played the champs. I missed Clev/Bal under should have known better when it looked too easy. 2-4
Pools: Survivor pool, I'll take New England and Baltimore to win. In the losers pool I am sticking with the Bills x2 and the Browns once. I'll keep riding the Bills as long as the match-ups allow. In the Pick 6 I am using Bama and the Ducks along with Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cincinnati, and the Cle/Bal under. For my NFL 5 team parlay I'll use Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cincinnati, New Orleans, and San Francisco.
Survivor pool survived with both entries and losers all lost. 2-4 in pick 6 and 2-3 in 5 team
Overall went 3-5-1 this week, good players will bounce back we'll see what happens

Fantasy Football Week 3
It has begun, I can't say it is because of the amount of teams I have I think its more because of the amount of time I have. I can't wait for the bye weeks to start so it will stop or at least slow a bit. What is it? It is micro managing my squads. I have looked at each of my teams a half dozen times or more since week 2 ended. I have changed every lineup at least 3 times and I am still 2nd guessing myself. I went 3-2 in week 2. Here are the lineups for week 3.
WPM - QB 2 RB 2 WR TE K DST 0-2
Philip Rivers, Joseph Addai, LeSean McCoy, Ochocinco, Eddie Royal, Zach Miller(oak), Mason Crosby and Steelers.
Sweetness - QB 2RB 2WR TE K DST 2-0

Bookieman Week 3
Lines being used are current to 2pm on Thursday.
NCAA: I'll take Alabama -7 at Arkansas and hope that the all powerful Nick Saban can beat the Hogs. I can't believe I am taking Stanford -4.5 at Notre Dame, I'll probably get my Domer Fan Card revoked but I haven't seen anything that would suggest the Irish can stop Stanford. [I also believe that the name Notre Dame still carries weight in Vegas and this line should really be closer to Stanford -7. Its that old catholic money that keeps the ND underdog lines closer than they should be and pushes the ND favorite lines higher than they should. Similar to why Cubs to win WS props are always at a lesser price than they should be, the blind faith following.] Final NCAA selection Oregon -11 at Arizona State. The "Quack Attack" has beat up on some cupcakes but are avg. better than 1 point per minute and that kind of confidence can carry a team against an inferior opponent. So I picked 3 road favorites, 2 of them playing against conference opponents and 1 playing an intellectual rival. No on can accuse me of cherry picking my selections.
NFL: Pittsburgh -3 at Tampa Bay, Cleveland/Baltimore Total Under 37, Detroit +11 at Minnesota, Cincinnati - 3 at Carolina, San Francisco -2.5 at Kansas City, and New Orleans -4 vs Atlanta. Keeping with the road favorite theme, I have 3 more here.Wrapped it up with a road dog, a home favorite and one under.

Athlete's Apologies Ring Hollow
As the father of 2 girls and a huge sports fan my common ground with my girls are their favorite athletes, our trips to sporting events, and their own games. I'm fairly certain that they have seen more live sporting events than most kids their age and hope that my love for sports has been transferred to them.
In the past dozen or so years I have seen female opportunities in sports skyrocket. Those chances haven't come without controversy either. The Patriots locker room incident of about 20 years ago was one of the darker incidents but there are others. Does Joe Namath try and plant one on Tony Siragusa if he is the sideline reporter instead of Suzy Kolber? Does Michael David Barrett shoot peephole video of Ed Werder? Does Brett Favre text pictures of his penis to Sal Paolantonio? My guess is No! on all accounts.
I love the fact that these opportunites are available and that my girls will have the chance to pursue a career in that direction if they choose to do so. I also hope that as a parent I will do my job to inform them about some of the less than flattering parts of life. I don't shelter them and I try not to avoid controversial topics when they are presented. Life is not all sunshine and rainbows and I get a kick out of people who try to raise their children as if it were. Eventually they will leave home and be subjected to some of the trash that society harbors, I'd much rather I explain it to them and teach them based on the incident than hide it from them and act like it doesn't exist.
The real point here is brought about because of a recent incident between female reporter Ines Sainz and members of the NY Jets. In my opinion the blame here lies about 80% on the Jets and about 20% on Sainz. Her past work experience has been somewhat less than on the up and up and her attire at times has been less than professional. Does that mean she deserves inappropriate behavior because of it? No not at all. At the same time players who have seen her work in the past may have been expecting a similar type of story Saturday at Jets practice. She can't turn it on and off depending on the day and for the most part she has turned it off in previous assignments. The Jets were still way out of line and should be reprimanded in some form.
Then today on the radio Clinton Portis makes some really ignorant comments but they were most likely the way he felt. The NFL and the Redskins catch wind of what he said and he was immediately apologizing. This angers me almost as much as the sexist crap that still exists in sports as a whole. If Portis said it and truly felt that way why is he apologizing. His apology is hollow, it means nothing. His comments were more sincere than his apology was. The comments, no matter how ignorant you or I think they were were his sentiment or opinion. His apology was something he was told to do. We already know how he feels and its not sorry. People offend way too easy these days and athletes apologize way too much. An athlete's apology is almost as common as a sunrise. Gone are the days of speaking your mind, now everything has to be said so that no one is put off by the words. Its really annoying.
Do you think Tiger Woods is sorry? He's sorry he got caught not sorry for his actions. Do you think the MLB players were sorry for steroids? Again sorry they got caught. If Ben Roethlisberger is sorry for his behavior why has it been alleged to happen multiple times? Because he can just apologize with some BS that he says in front of a camera and all is forgiven. Do you think John Rocker was sorry? No he was a backwoods redneck who really was racist and anti-gay. Was Floyd Mayweather Jr really sorry for his racist remarks towards Pacquiao? Hell no! Somebody told him to apologize or those comments might cost him millions down the road. Is Reggie Bush sorry for the storm that surrounds him stemming from incidents in 2005? Nope because he got paid, his family got paid, and he is still getting paid. Almost as annoying as these empty apologies are the apologies that come with the promise that with some spiritual guidance or divine intervention these "model" citizens will be better people.
Walks like a duck, talks like a duck, damn good chance its a duck! Come on people! The actions or words of the person is a better indication of who/what the person is than the apology that comes after to squash the storm and appease the masses.
Fantasy Football Week 1 Recap
Overall a pretty good week, 4-1 with one squeaker. Had Rice, Mathews, and Bowe against Jets D and 2 point defecit. I only won by 1 point. My loss came where a win was possible but not sure that I could have made those decisions beforehand. Worse case scenario I took a loss there but gained some confidence in my benched players that they can be starters. Anyhow, here are how the games matched up.

Recap Bookieman Week 1
I added 2 bets in the NCAA on Friday night and split them. WVU -13 @ marshall and Over 75 UTEP/Houston. WVU needed OT to win by 3 but 78 points were scored in the late game. 1-1 coupled with 8-5-1 from last weekend makes me 9-6-1 headed into Saturday.
My Saturday NCAA selections were Miami, FL +9 @ tOSU, Cal -9 vs Colorado, and Stanford -6 @ ucla.
Cal & Stanford rolled to easy wins while the Canes were beaten soundly by the Buckeyes. Finish Saturday 2-1. Overall: 11-7-1
Sunday picks were Miami -3, Oak/Ten Over 41, Ten -6, Pit +2, SF -3, Ariz -4, GB/Phil over 48, Dal/Was over 41. Started out HOT! 4-0 in early games. Mia, Oak/Ten over, Ten, and Pit all good. Wheels fell off after that. SF was embarrassed by Seattle, Arizona pushed at St. Louis, GB/Phil came up a point short, and Dal/Was put up tons of yards but the end zones were protected by a force field. Finished 4-3-1.
Overall 15-10-2 new selections Thursday.
My 2 winners, Miami & Arizona won. My 3 losers, Minnesota, Buffalo, and St. Louis all lost. Still alive in both pools.

I will post opponents lineups during the Tuesday recap since I can't control whether their lineup is set by Friday. Chances are I could end up making last minute changes along the way too but I'll give you my best effort by Friday.

Bookieman Returns
OK, I promised my picks each week. I have slacked off on writing this week but was up back to back to back nights til after 4am. Back, hips, and legs are killing me recently and now I have this deep, dry, cough that has made my lungs its personal playground. Been a tough week to be down with so much new life around as the football season begins. More importantly the betting season.
First up my survivor pool. I have 2 entries and I must pick a winner each week but I cant use the same team twice. Factoring in not using the same team twice I am taking MIAMI over buffalo and ARIZONA over St. Louis. I liked the Titans and the Saints too but figured I could use them down the road. Next is the opposite of the survivor pool, I have to pick a team to lose each week. Can use the same team all year if you want. Even with that rule in place only 9 of 94 made it to week 17 last year. If more than one makes it to week 17 you must pick every game and I was one of the 9. I went something like 13-3 or 12-4 in the final week. Won over $900, used half to pay for Cubs tickets, fitting huh, "losers" pool bought losers tickets. I have 3 entries, part of entry goes to a memorial scholarship fund to honor a friend who passed a few years ago. My picks to lose: RAMS, BILLS, VIKINGS. All my eggs in 1(two) basket(s) with Mia/Buf and AZ/STL games. There is a theme keep reading.
NCAA: I haven't looked at many games here but I like Stanford -6 @ ucla. I'll also take Miami, FL +9 @ Ohio State and Cal -9 vs Colorado.
I play in two pools in which you must pick games with the spread. One is a Pick 6 and most weeks you have 100 choices to pick 6 from. That includes all NFL games with sides and o/u and between 18 and 20 NCAA games (sides only). I used Stanford -6 here and also like Miami -3 @ buffalo, Oak/Ten over 41, Arizona -4 @ st. louis, GB/Philly over 48, and Dal/Was over 41.
The other pool is 5 team parlay and only includes Sun/Mon NFL games and only the sides, no totals. For that I like Miami -3, Arizona -4, Tenn -6 vs oakland, SF -3 @ seattle, and Pitt +2 vs atlanta. I told you those Mia/Buf and Az/Stl games were a theme for week 1.
My fantasy teams will be covered tomorrow then recap the picks on Monday and fantasy on Tuesday
